Unusually for a manager, Don Mackay had been a goalkeeper as a player with Forfar, Dundee United and Southend United between 1958 and 1974.
He had also coached at Bristol City, Coventry City, Glasgow Rangers and Norlesundby in Denmark before getting a start in management with Dundee (1980-83). Spells with Coventry (1984-86) and Blackburn Rovers (1987-91) followed before he was appointed to the Fulham job in January 1992.
A promising 1992/93 campaign was followed by a disastrous 1993/94 term and, after a half-time dressing-room showdown at Leyton Orient, Mackay was shown the door with nine games of the season remaining.
Ray Lewington stepped up as Caretaker Manager to try to save the Club from relegation to the league basement, but defeat at Swansea City in the final match consigned the Whites to the drop.
